The Avengers Roster: A
By Sean McQuaid
Complete descriptions of each individual's affiliation with the Avengers are detailed below.
Aleta (Aleta Ogord):
Honorary member of the Avengers; active member of Guardians of the Galaxy. At a time when she shared a composite corporeal existence with her husband Starhawk, Aleta was a member of the 31st century adventurers called the Guardians of the Galaxy when that group made an extended visit to the 20th century in pursuit of Korvac. During their lengthy stay, they were hosted and assisted by the Avengers, who extended honorary Avengers membership to the Guardians. The Guardians eventually returned to their own time period, but later made a brief excursion to the 20th century during which they repulsed an attack on Avengers Mansion by the Masters of Evil before returning to their own time.
Angel [III] (Warren Kenneth Worthington III): See Archangel
Longtime costumed identity of veteran adventurer and Avengers ally Warren Worthington, currently known as Archangel. Worthington started out as a solo costumed crimefighter called the Avenging Angel, adopting his longtime Angel alias after he became a founding member of the X-Men. He adopted his current alias as Archangel after undergoing mutations that turned his skin blue and converted his body's wings into razor-edged organic steel constructs. His wings have since reverted to their original feathered state, but he retains both his blue skin and his Archangel alias, though he is still sometimes referred to simply as Angel. Warren Worthington is unrelated to the original Angel (a wealthy, long-retired 1930s-1940s costumed vigilante who recently bankrolled the vigilante Scourge organization) and the second Angel (the original's twin brother, now an elderly vagrant, who occasionally acted as a substitute for his sibling). A fourth and equally unrelated Angel, a new mutant adventurer, has since emerged as a public figure.
Angelhawk (Warren, last name presumably Worthington or Hall):
Judgment League Avengers member; secret ally to JLX. An amalgam of X-Men member (and Avengers ally) Archangel and DC Comics character Hawkman, Angelhawk was a member of the Judgment League Avengers (a combination of DC's Justice League and Marvel's Avengers) in the alternate universe of Amalgam Comics (a temporary merger of DC and Marvel Comics). The character's abilities, appearance and personality were a fairly even mixture of the two source characters. He was a covert ally to the renegade Judgment League faction JLX since he was, like them, a mutant.
Ant-Man (Henry J. Pym): See Yellowjacket
First costumed identity assumed by Avengers founder Henry Pym. He later assumed the aliases Giant-Man, Goliath and Yellowjacket (his current alias), and for a time operated with the Avengers as the plainclothes Doctor Pym. All four of his costumed identities have been assumed by one or more other people. For instance, Pym gave his Ant-Man equipment to Scott Lang, who uses it as the new Ant-Man.
Ant-Man [II] (Scott Edward Harris Lang):
Longtime ally of the Avengers, and former employee as Lang; has declined offer of Avengers membership; former operative of the Fantastic Four; former member of Heroes for Hire. Lang first encountered the Avengers as an electronics technician in the employ of their patron, Tony Stark (secretly a founding member as Iron Man). Later, Lang stole Henry Pym's Ant-Man equipment to save his daughter Cassie's life--and when Pym saw the constructive and skillful use Lang made of his gear, he allowed Lang to keep it as the new Ant-Man, with his blessing. Through his friendship with Pym and employment by Stark, Lang became a frequent ally of the Avengers to the point of being considered an unofficial member of sorts; however, he has declined an invitation to officially join the group, preferring part-time superheroing since he is a single parent.
Anton, Franz:
One-time consultant to the Avengers. A leading biochemist, Dr. Anton was abducted by the Keeper of the Flame and rescued by the Avengers, who hoped Anton might be able to assist Goliath, who was then trapped at gigantic size; however, though grateful to the Avengers, Anton was unable to cure Goliath's condition.
Apollo (Scott, last name unrevealed, presumably Summers or Terrill):
Judgment League Avengers member, resigned; member of JLX. An amalgam of X-Men leader Cyclops and DC Comics character the Ray [II], Apollo was a member of the Judgment League Avengers (a combination of DC's Justice League and Marvel's Avengers) in the alternate universe of Amalgam Comics (a temporary merger of DC and Marvel Comics). The character's abilities, appearance and personality were primarily those of Cyclops, though his name and costuming reflected those of the Ray. He and several other mutant Judgment League members formed a renegade team called JLX (a sort of Justice League/X-Men combination) to advance the cause of mutants.
Aragorn:
Former steed to Black Knight [III] (Dane Whitman); former longtime steed to Valkyrie (Brunnhilde); current steed to Valkyrie [III] (Samantha Parrington); past ally to the Avengers; current ally to the Defenders. Aragorn is a horse whom Dane Whitman gave wings and the power of flight through genetic engineering techniques created by Dane's late uncle, the previous Black Knight. When Dane's first time trip to the era of the Crusades separated him from Aragorn, the horse was adopted by another adventurer, Brunnhilde the Valkyrie. Aragorn remained in the Valkyrie's custody for years thereafter, with Dane's blessing. More recently, Brunnhilde gave Aragorn to the new Valkyrie, Samantha Parrington, and as her steed Aragorn currently fights alongside the Defenders. Aragorn is far more physically vital than an ordinary horse of his age would be, thanks in part to eating the mystical hay of Valhalla during his time with Brunnhilde.
Archangel (Warren Kenneth Worthington III):
Longtime ally of the Avengers; has declined offers of Avengers membership; founding member of the X-Men; former founding member of Champions and X-Factor; former member of Defenders. Originally known as the Avenging Angel and active for years as the Angel, Archangel is a wealthy, winged mutant adventurer who has repeatedly encountered the Avengers over the years, both alone and as a founding member of the X-Men. He has declined offers of Avengers membership but remains on good terms with the team. He is currently an active member of the X-Men.
Astrovik, Vance: See Justice and Vance Astro
A lifelong superhero fan who idolized the Avengers in general and Captain America in particular, Vance had his first indirect encounter with the Avengers when their associates, the 31st Century adventurers known as the Guardians of the Galaxy, watched over Vance as his unseen protectors for a period of weeks. The Guardians believed that their old foe Korvac, who had fled to the late 20th century, might target young Vance since he was destined to become Guardians founder Vance Astro in their timeline. In actuality, Korvac was never after young Vance, but had instead embarked on a quest for godlike power that ended with his suicide during a conflict with the Avengers and the Guardians. The Guardians returned to their own time period shortly thereafter, but not before their Vance Astro awakened young Vance Astrovik's latent mutant mental powers, hoping to spare at least one timeline's Vance Astrovik from enduring the tortorous thousand-year space journey that led to him becoming a Guardian. The plan worked, since young Vance's new powers led to him becoming a superhero rather than an astronaut. Originally known as Marvel Boy (the fourth hero by that alias), young Vance later adopted a new costumed alias as Justice, in which guise he joined the Avengers.
